A major new study has been put together to investigate osteoarthritis of the hands and fingers. About time- have you noticed how many studies are done into knees and hips and yet osteoarthritis in the hands, especially at the base of the thumb is ignored even though it is really common.
Osteoarthritis of the hands and fingers is just as devastating- as I know only too well as that is where I have it! Simple everyday activities, like opening jars, doing up buttons or just clipping on the dog’s lead becomes a fiddly nightmare!
It is crazy that no treatment guidelines are available for osteoarthritis of the hands and fingers and the authors of the study into “multidisciplinary and multidimensional intervention” for patients with osteoarthritis of the hands and fingers clearly think so too:
“Although several guidelines recommend that treatment programmes in patients with hand osteoarthritis should be both multidisciplinary and multidimensional, currently no such treatment programme for hand osteoarthritis has been described.”
So they aim to
“systematically develop a multidisciplinary and multidimensional non-pharmacological treatment programme and to give a detailed description on the content of this treatment programme.”
This is very exciting to me as it will validate my own work and I love the fact they have gone down the no drug route!
This is EXACTLY the same approach I have in Joint Control.
Osteoarthritis of the Hands and Fingers Treatment Program
They developed a program which contains the following
“an individual intake, four weekly nurse and occupational therapist-led group sessions and a booster session after six months. Treatment components of the programme are self-management, daily home exercises to enhance joint mobility and grip strength and education about ergonomic principles. The treatment programme is tailored to the needs of individual patients with hand osteoarthritis.”
They could be testing the Joint Control program for osteoarthritis of the hands and fingers! The big difference is that as well as exercises I teach you to self massage as well. Massage has been shown be be highly effective so add that to an exercise program and you get an even better result.
To give you the ‘multidimensional’ treatments I will also teach you:
♦ How to use heat and cold packs
♦ Which supplements you should use
♦ Which braces, splints and supports you should use and when to use them.
Did You Want to Be Part of this Study for Osteoarthritis of the Hands and Fingers?
They have already got all the subjects for the actual study and
“Currently, the programme is being evaluated in an ongoing randomized clinical trial.”
But you can still get this type of treatment. I KNOW this treatment protocol works as I have used it myself for 4 years now and I have clients use it. We all improved.
This is what Molly said
“After only a week of doing the massage most of the pain in my thumb had gone but I still couldn’t grip properly but by the end of week 4 I was delighted. My thumb felt almost normal and was fine unless I lifted something awkwardly. Suddenly the hard work was worth it.”
For my own story I am able to do up buckles and girths on horses. I get the occasional twinge like Molly but only if I catch my thumb awkwardly- stubbing it is the worst!
This means we can all get back to enjoying the things we love doing and in my case doing it safely!
