One of the osteoarthritis natural remedies trialed in this study appears to be Scutellaria baicalensis (picture by Doronenko, used with permisssion).

This piece of research has just been published in Nutrition Journal about one of several new osteoarthritis natural remedies that are currently being well researched with good clinical trial.

Good clinical studies are often what are termed RCT or randomised control trials where the new treatment is pitted against the old or a placebo drug. This study was also what is termed a blind study where neither the participants nor the people studying the data know who has taken what.

This study actually tests the two different amounts of these osteoarthritis natural remedies new treatment known only as UP446 against a NSAID (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug) called Celecoxib and a placebo on people with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis.

The purpose of the study into these two osteoarthritis natural remedies was to:

“This study was conducted to compare the effect and safety of two dosages of UP446 as compared with Celecoxib and placebo in subjects with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee or hip.”

All the study reveals about UP446 is that it is made up of two osteoarthritis natural remedies that have been uses in China and India for over 1000 years. By reading the references at the bottom I worked out that one of these was almost certainly ‘scutellaria baicalensi’ which is a flowering plant which is part of the mint family and well known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties. However what the other is I am not sure which is most annoying but I am sure done on purpose by Unigen whose product this is and who have sponsored the study. This type of declared interest in a study by a company is very common (who do you think do all the drug trials!) so please do not be concerned by that.

This is the conclusion of the study:

“In summary the results of the present study provide data that supports the use of UP446 at 250 mg/day and at 500 mg/day for the effective management of the clinical course of osteoarthritis. Significant improvement of osteoarthritis symptoms was noticed after 30, 60 and 90 days of treatment with UP446 at 250 mgs and 500 mgs/day. UP446 at 250 mg/day and 500 mg/day is significantly more effective than Celecoxib 200 mg/day for the reduction of function incapacity caused by osteoarthritis, within 30 days (p = 0.010) of treatment and UP446 500 mgs is more effective than celecoxib for reduction of pain at 30 days (p = 0.020)The proprietary plant extract was well tolerated. Symptomatic adverse events and incident of positive fecal occult blood were comparable to the placebo group. No other serious adverse events were observed.

On the basis of the positive findings in this pilot trial of UP446 we concluded that the mechanism of dual COX/LOX inhibition may confer clinical safety and efficacy benefits comparable to or, in some cases superior to traditional NSAID treatment, offering an effective alternative option in a dietary supplement for managing discomfort associated with OA. Based on the preliminary evidence of this pilot study an additional study in larger”

If you are not sure what all that means then all it says is that these two osteoarthritis natural remedies when mixed together were more effective in controlling pain than the NSAID.

Are osteoarthritis natural remedies the best treatment?

If you are a regular reader you will know what are my thoughts on the use of NSAIDs for osteoarthritis. To find a natural remedy that is effective will be great news for many of us but whether we can make the medical profession believe it will be another matter.

I believe the use of NSAIDs is dangerous and ineffective for osteoarthritis. OA is a lifelong condition and long term use of NSAIDs has been shown to have numerous side effects, some of which can be lethal. The more we use natural remedies and therapies the better in my opinion.

In the meantime I am waiting to find out what the other part of UP446 is and as soon as I find out or Unigen announce it I will let you know. Click on the RSS feed or like us on Facebook and I will let you know too. At least we know that osteoarthritis natural remedies like these in UP446 have no serious side effects and are unlikely to do us any serious harm unlike the NSAIDs.

Update 15 May 2012

Hi – Dr. Sophie here. I was reading through some of the most popular posts on the blog, and I realized I did not tell you about one of my favorite osteoarthritis natural remedies.

There are so many osteoarthritis natural remedies out there it can be difficult to choose one. I recommend JointEase Plus by Native Remedies as it contains glucosamine, Devil’s Claw and Indian frankincense, all of which has been shown in research to help osteoarthritis. Follow the instructions on how many to take.

Please be aware that if you have a duodenal or gastric ulcers or if you are allergic to shellfish then don’t use them. They should also not be taken if you are currently taking with blood thinners or anti-inflammatory medication (that’s the Devil’s Claw in them). But don’t worry if those cautions apply to you try InflammaGo instead. It is also really good at reducing inflammation.

I always recommend Native Remedies products as they guarantee to start with whole herbs, wild crafted where possible and use the Full Spectrum Method to create remedies that are more effective and have the fewest side effects. Their remedies are also free of gluten, artificial colors, flavors and preservatives, and are never tested on animals. They have the added bonus of being able to ship all over the world so it doesn’t matter where my readers live. I believe they supply not only the best osteoarthritis natural remedies but also the best herbal and homeopathic remedies online.

The blend used in the study was labeled UP446, so the other plant was probably Acacia catechu, see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22432516
