I am one of those people who needs to loose weight. I know loosing weight will help my back and even though my blood pressure and glucose levels are within normal limits there is no doubt loosing weight will improve my quality of life.
However when you have OA in a weight bearing joint (in my case my spine) then you need to look at ways of loosing weight without high impact exercise. That’s makes it even harder to loose the pounds and I understand how so many of you feel.
Over the years I have tried weight watchers, slimmers world, the Atkins diet and counting calories. I can honestly say I have lost weight on them all BUT I ALWAYS PUT THE WEIGHT BACK ON!!!! I am a real yo-yo dieter and that is actually very demoralising- as a person as you feel a failure.
Three weeks ago I saw an interview on a NZ chat show with a Dr. Michael Mosley. Now this guy appears to be well known in the UK but down here in the colonies we seem to have missed him! Anyway what he is saying is a bit radical but it made quite a bit of sense to me. After all we are designed to be hunter gatherers and our physiology has not caught up with our incredibly fast evolution in other ways. So if we are hunter gatherers we are going to have lean days and feast days. Maybe that is how are body’s are set up to cope.
This is the video of his “research”. Now this is not research in the medical sense but it does make good viewing.
So if you watched that video you will know Dr. Mosley is now destined to live longer than I am!
Could This Be the First of the Osteoarthritis Weight Loss Diets That Does More Than Help Us Lose Weight?
What interested me was the physiological effect of his fasting. It seemed to make cells repair themselves and isn’t that what we want our cartilage to do? Could this way of eating really make our cartilage repair itself?
Who knows and there is certainly no evidence of this so please don’t jump to that conclusion.
Anyway 3 weeks ago I bought his book The Fast Diet: Lose Weight, Stay Healthy, and Live Longer with the Simple Secret of Intermittent Fasting off Amazon and started following his advice. Today was the end of the 3rd week and I can report the following:
1. I have lost 6lbs.
2. I have lost 2 inches off my stomach and my muffin tops have considerably reduced.
3. I have had to start wearing a belt on my jeans and I don’t feel bloated any more.
4. I have suffered with indigestion at least 4 out of 7 days for over 2 years now. The tests revealed nothing. I have had no indigestion since the second day of fasting.
5. I feel energised and less tired.
6. No change in my back pain!
I think the thing that surprises me most is that fasting for 1 day is so easy as you are not really fasting. Women have to have between 400 and 500 calories on fast days and men between 500 and 600. I simply have a 500 brunch and seem to go through the day fine. Others eat it in 2 meals. Do I get hungry? Yes at times but not unbearably as I know I can eat whatever I want the next day. It takes all the pressure off somehow and I don’t get obsessed with it.
Will this be the answer for everybody? I don’t know but I do believe I can stick to this as once I reach my goal weight I have to fast one day a week. For me I believe this is one of the osteoarthritis weight loss diets I can stick to for the rest of my life.
