SAM-e for Osteoarthritis Helps With More than Just the Pain

SAM-e for osteoarthritis

For the chemists amongst you this is what SAM-e looks like!

SAM-e stands for S-adenosylmethionine (and no I can’t pronounce it well either) a well researched supplement. It can be taken and has been show to help with many conditions but I often recommend SAM-e for osteoarthritis.

This is an article by Maria Rodale aand was published in the Huffington Post. It starts with a good basic explanation of SAM-e :

SAM-e is present in every cell of the human body.  Its basic role is to make many other compounds work more efficiently in the body, and it seems that when the body does not generate enough SAM-e, problems can occur. You probably haven’t heard much about SAM.

Maria then goes on to list some of the common conditions SAM-e can help with, including depression, pain, Alzheimer’s and sexual health.

Why is SAM-e for Osteoarthritis So Good?

I have talked many times about OA can lead to depression and so as SAM-e helps with both pain and depression it can give you a real boost by breaking this pain-depression-more pain-more depression cycle. It does this by hitting both ends of the cycle making in doubly effective.

Depression. Depressed individuals tend to have low levels of SAM-e. Researchers from Italy first documented the potential antidepressant effects of SAM-e in the 1970s, and it has been a prescription drug in that country since 1979. Recently, a Harvard study found that SAM-e helps depressed people who don’t respond to prescription drugs. They think SAM-e might actually be helping to create new healthy neurotransmitters in the brain.

Pain. Ten years ago, a study of pain medications found that SAM-e was as effective as over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) at reducing arthritis pain, and it appears to be safer. Americans consume a lot of over-the-counter pain relievers, but these drugs can carry serious risks: Acetaminophen can cause acute liver failure, especially when combined with alcohol, and NSAIDs in general may cause kidney dysfunction, increase the risk of cardiovascular issues, and also negatively impact sexual function.

Are There Any Problems With Taking SAM-e for Osteoarthritis?

Generally SAM-e for osteoarthritis is considered pretty safe but it can cause anxiety, headache, insomnia and nervousness in some people. It can also interact with certain other drugs, so check with your Doctor or Pharmacist before taking it.

My recommendation is that you try it SAM-e for osteoarthritis for 60 days and see if it helps. If it hasn’t made any difference then stop taking it but if you feel better keep taking it. Also make sure it is a good quality supplement that has been properly prepared otherwise you will be wasting your money.
