Is Osteoarthritis Genetic (part 1)

Ever since the advent of the discovery of DNA gene research researchers have tried to link every disease they could and say your genetics is to blame so there is nothing you can do to change this. ┬áThere is a branch of genetic study called epigenetics. This is turning the whole question of is osteoarthritis genetic on it’s head.

Epigenetics is the study of how the things we do (nuture) influence the way our DNA works (nature) and so causes diseases such as osteoarthritis, cancer, diabetes etc. The scary thing is it is not just what we do to ourselves but also what our parents and grandparents did that affects our genes.

For an entertaining and fairly simple explanation of what is epigenetics watch this video

Having watched it I am pretty sure the presenters mother and grandmother must have been on speed!

I am sure you need a lie down in a darkened room to recover from that so tomorrow I will explain how epigenetic research has made a major breakthrough in answering the question is osteoarthritis genetic?
